Research Purpose

The purpose of this research study is to determine how an exercise including stimuli that are presented outside of awareness affects performance on a complex color-naming task.

Description of the Research

This study will take place entirely on your computer. First, you will be asked to focus on an "X" in the center of your computer screen. During this time, you will be exposed to stimuli that you may or may not be able to see. Then you will be asked to complete a task in which you correctly choose the color of a series of colored words. At the conclusion of the study, you will be asked to fill out a brief demographic questionnaire. This study takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

This research is being conducted by a doctoral student at Adelphi University. Participants in this research must be at least 18 years of age, and must speak English as their native language. If you do not meet these requirements, please do not proceed. Thank you.

Potential Risks

The procedures in this study have been used before, and there are no known risks associated with them, but it is possible that the subliminal stimuli will slightly alter your mood for a brief period of time (15-20 minutes). In the unlikely event that your participation in this study causes you any emotional discomfort or distress, do not hesitate to contact the Principal Investigator at philipbender@mail.adelphi.edu.

Potential Benefits

Your participation in this study will not have any individual benefit, but it will contribute to the scientific community's understanding of mental processes and the effects of subliminal stimuli.

Costs/Compensation

Your participation in this study is voluntary and will not be rewarded with any compensation. It is not expected to take more than 15 minutes.

Contact Persons

If you have any questions or concerns resulting from the study, if you wish to learn the results once it is complete, or if you want to discuss any discomfort relating to your participation, please contact Philip Bender, the Principal Investigator of this study, at philipbender@mail.adelphi.edu or 917-575-4653. This research is being supervised by Dr. Joel Weinberger, a faculty member at Adelphi University. He can be reached at Weinberger@adelphi.edu or 516-877-4816.

The information obtained during this study will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law. However, this research may be reviewed by government agencies (such as the Department of Health and Human Services), individuals who are authorized to monitor or audit the research, or the Institutional Review Board (the committee that oversees all research in human subjects at Adelphi University) if required by applicable laws or regulations. The material will be maintained for up to 7 years.

To ensure that participants cannot re-take the study, an encrypted version of your IP address will be logged upon completion and stored in a local file on our server. This file contains only IP addresses and no survey data, and cannot be used to identify you in any way. If the server is compromised for some reason, the only obtainable data would be an encrypted file containing un-resolvable IP addresses. Due to the nature of the technology being used for this study, no guarantees can be made regarding the interception of data sent via the Internet by third parties. For added security, we recommend you close your web browser upon completion of the study.

A note on privacy

This survey is anonymous.

The record kept of your survey responses does not contain any identifying information about you unless a specific question in the survey has asked for this. If you have responded to a survey that used an identifying token to allow you to access the survey, you can rest assured that the identifying token is not kept with your responses. It is managed in a separate database, and will only be updated to indicate that you have (or haven't) completed this survey. There is no way of matching identification tokens with survey responses in this survey.
